Welcome to the
Anderson Guitarworks
NAMM Show Extravaganza

Part II

…and continuing last week’s festivities…

The Winter NAMM Show is the music industry’s biggest tradeshow. Every year it is held at the Anaheim Convention Center, in California—right across the street from Disneyland. As usual, there was a non-stop, four-day party in the Anderson booth, where we played host to as many people as we could possible fit in the booth at one time. If you have ever seen the Marx Brother’s movie, “A Night at the Opera,” it looked like a reenactment of their famous stateroom scene. (Tom’s the one with his eyes closed.) We had a very fun time, with loads of gorgeous playing and sounding guitars.

For the next few weeks we will give you a glimpse into our adventures, so you can be there with us. And we will tell you which Anderson dealer now has the exclusive NAMM Guitar we are sharing with you.

Have fun!

NAMM is about what is cool and established. It is also about what is new and what is special. And there is certainly none or nothing more special than the all-new Atom Special—pictured here with Jim West—the amazingly versatile and tasty guitar player from Weird Al’s band. To cover that gig effectively Jim has to be well versed in all styles. And he really is one enjoyable guitar player to experience.

Special huh? So what makes this new guitar so special anyway? Well it would easily be enough to call it special just by the way it plays—with flawless and unparalleled Anderson action and geometry. No other place in this giant show was playability so sweet or so accessible, but that is only the very beginning of the specialness of this Special—that’s for sure.

Atom Special is special because it does not have a maple top crowning its body as does its older sibling—the regular and now established Atom. So then, the Atom Special derives its ultimate specialness from a body that is all one type of wood through and through—all-Mahogany or all-Primavera.

All-Mahogany, Atom Specials deliver a thunderously round sonic blow to all within earshot. But more on the all-Mahogany variety in a subsequent Guitar of the Week. For this one is made of all-Primavera—both body and neck back. Now that alone is quite a special attribute.

Primavera is a large rainforest canopy tree native to Mexico, Central America and South America. Ours are grown and harvested on plantations where they are used to shade coffee plants, so it is also an ecologically friendly wood. Say, perhaps we should be offering a free cup of coffee with every Primavera, Atom Special. To the tree-growers this unique guitar wood is also known as white mahogany but it is not actually of the mahogany genus. Tom just had a feeling that Primavera could be used as guitar wood with great results and we were certainly not disappointed.

Primavera’s sonic signature is both similar and yet quite different to that of Mahogany’s more-familiar timbre. Here’s what we mean: Primavera produces a tone resting securely on a robust mahogany-like thickness but this sound is lightened with the inclusion of a more open-middle and soft upper-end sparkle, reminiscent of the musical complexity of Swamp Ash. So, to sum up, Primavera could most easily be described as a cross between Mahogany and Swamp Ash. It produces a light and pleasingly percussive bloom to each note when played with soft pick attack through its M1- pickups in the neck and middle positions. But it can roar to life when its HO2 humbucker is engaged and articulated with a bit more of an aggressive hand. It is these divergent attributes that manifests itself into an extremely versatile all-in-one instrument—sparkling highs blended to soothing midrange.

This Atom Special created a very special NAMM Show experience for all who played it—that is for sure.

This first-of-its-kind Atom Special is now at the world famous Charley’s Guitar Shop in Dallas, Texas.
