NAMM Show Extravaganza

Part IV

At the height of NAMM Show festivities—with people dancing in the aisles, drinking soda and bottled water, wearing big funny hats and colorful shirts—it was perhaps a bit embarrassingly obvious that one and only one guitar stood out above all other offerings as the most earthshaking attendee of the show.

As the NAMM Blimp drifted overhead, it all became abundantly clear. Hey, they were just displaying their true feelings.

Once you have put your hands to a Crowdster Plus and witnessed its auditory gifts, your life as a musician changes—for the better, of course.

The original Crowdster is now famous as a Live-Music Acoustic Guitar that delivers superior plugged-in Acoustic Guitar tones without the concern of feedback or the need of re-EQing to make it usable from the stage—even with a full band behind you.

Its sound is spectacular!

But then we began to get phone calls—many phone calls, all asking for the same thing. They went something like this: “Yea, I was trying out a Crowdster at my Anderson dealer and I love it! It has the best live-acoustic guitar sound I have ever heard. The only other thing I wish I could also have is an electric guitar sound on this same guitar. You guys are Tom Anderson Guitarworks—The Electric Guitar guys. Could you do a Crowdster that also has an electric guitar pickup in it so I would be able to blend the two sounds together or play some electric guitar once in awhile? My gig requires it.”

Many calls like this one got us seriously thinking.

But there could be no compromise in Crowdster’s already stellar live-music acoustic performance—and yet the electric tone must be fabulous and substantial.

As with all great acoustic guitars, bronze acoustic guitar strings must remain, so wonderful acoustic tone is imparted.

Hence, a new electric guitar pickup was designed specifically for a Crowdster and made to perform with bronze acoustic guitar strings. Enter the Anderson CMA pickup. It delivers healthy and robust supplemental electric guitar tones to support Crowdster’s acoustic endeavors—or to stand alone. The CMA willingly grants an electric guitar amp full-bodied, clean electric guitar tones and also shines through the distortion channel or a pedal, where crushing resonance is now mere child’s play.

All very impressive! Would you expect any less?

Although its output can be run mono as well as stereo, the very best way to get the full bouquet of tone from this advanced and versatile instrument is to plug out of its stereo jack and “Y-cable” into a PA, or acoustic guitar amp, for Piezo tone, and into your favorite guitar amp for your electric guitar cravings.

Two big sounds! Both unparalleled and very extraordinary!

There is nothing quite like it to be found anywhere. You could say Crowdster Plus stands alone.

And with expanded abilities to bring more of your music under the reign of one stellar instrument, control must be expanded as well. Here is the control panel of a Crowdster Plus and how it performs.

Let’s begin with the mysterious “dot” between the two big knobs and the three smaller ones.

The “dot” is a subterranean Stereo/Mono button.

It decides what signal will be exiting the guitar at the jack. Up is Stereo and down is Mono. Stereo enables the use of two amps with a stereo Y-cable—one electric guitar amp and one acoustic amp or PA. Down is Mono and will combine both Crowdster Plus pickups into one mono-cable output. Of course, Stereo Out will yield the most impressive tones on earth—but both are very good indeed.

The button is mounted subterranean, so it cannot be inadvertently bumped into the other position before or during a show—guaranteeing the only surprises during one of your inspired performances will be phenomenal acoustic and electric tones.

The chrome mini-toggle is a 3-Way switch to select between pickups—Electric/Both/Acoustic—from down to up.

The first big knob (far right) is the Electric Guitar Volume when the Crowdster is running in stereo and a master volume when operating in mono output.

The next big knob is the Acoustic Guitar Volume for stereo operations and serves as a blend control for mono duties.

The three smaller knobs are Treble, Middle and Bass tone controls for the Acoustic only—running from right to left respectively, as you view the picture.

Many Artists at the NAMM Show put this Crowdster Plus through its paces and they all came away with the same consensus—I love it!

Jim West, from Weird Al Yankovic’s Band, wanted to hold it as he and Tom visited. But then he could wait no longer and plugged into both acoustic and electric guitar amps. A crowd quickly gathered. (Why else do you think we named it Crowdster?) He played beautiful passages of Hawaiian “Slack-Key”—a rich style of acoustic playing. With both amps pumping, it was jaw-droppingly amazing to listen.

Ryan, of Lonestar, could not stop playing it. But no matter because he is a great guy to hang with.

The inimitable Buzz Feiten would not sit still long enough for me to get a fuzz-free picture—all we got is fuzz of Buzz. But you can still tell the intensity, precision and feel with which this wonderful musician plays. His hands look like a spider crawling all over the fretboard—amazing chord voicings—so musical, so in tune and so impressive. He literally stopped traffic for yards in all directions.

Crowdster Plus also took part in a 45 minute, high-energy jam with Tal Morris, of Credence Clearwater Revisited and Jeff Pevar of Crosby, Stills, Nash and CPR, just to name a few. They traded instruments back and forth, playing Crowdy and a Tobacco Fade, Atom. Smoke was rising from the guitars when they finished.

So, where did this extremely popular, very first Crowdster Plus go? Why, it went to Magdon Music. But it only stayed there for a few hours before Joe promised to give it a very good home, full of happiness and music.
