The Classic
Ruby Slippers

Creating a whole and happy planet should be the goal of everyone present, for in the pursuit of this objective the individual’s happiness and fulfillment is realized and it is from this position of individual contentment that the whole will be made complete. For one to successfully pursue this lofty goal the ground must be fertile and the atmosphere somewhat tranquil and unified. There is such a place found here on the earth. It is from this place that a transformation began. It set into motion a small movement that realized value and granted power to the individual. It sanctioned this because on some level it understood more closely than ever before that we are all connected. When everyone is allowed to freely seek their highest good it is soon evident that good is greatly amplified when shared. No one can accomplish alone what can be demonstrated with a united union. On some level we all know this to be true. Openly sharing the joy of your success and supporting other’s rise to well being will quickly lead to the joyful prosperity of all, eventually manifesting the whole and happy planet once only dreamed of. This place I spoke of also believes these aforementioned truths to be unalienable rights granted by God! A radical statement perhaps, but what if they are right?

By the way, who did you vote for as the last millennium’s most influential participant? If you didn’t, you may want to take a moment and do so now. We’ll wait….. Upon who did you decide? I selected one of the members of this small movement. The one who penned this:

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

And it goes on from there. This life-changing declaration was presented on July 4th 1776. Happy Birthday America! This is the first time ever in recorded history that any group of people dared to establish a system based on the truth that all people are created equal and that we are all entitled and needed to be part of a totality that allows and encourages us to pursue and realize freedom and happiness. This single motion changed the world forever. This ideal is worth everyone’s contemplation and participation for in its undistorted form it is one of the paths that will lead us closer than we have ever been before. It is from this platform that all can be accomplished as long as we remember that through kindness and support to each other we will create universal harmony. That can many times mean offering kindness to someone who seems not to deserve it. But kindness (not to be confused with wimpyness) in this situation is like magic, healing wounds and heading off potential conflict. Because, the closer you get, the closer you are!

Doug is a bold man. On February 27, 2001 he took a rather giant step himself. Not only did he order “The Classic” from the Brook Mays Pro Shop in Dallas, Texas but he chose Ruby Slippers as the finish (our name for sparkle red) and gold hardware. What a guitar! This instrument emotes with a fat, radiant, vintage personality. This “tone-of-life” is brought forth from the heart of a perfect-weight alder body and solid maple neck. The neck has a “62 Roundback” backshape with a 1 11/16-inch nut width—a big boy. Like all Anderson necks, it incorporates a lightening fast satin finish and perfectly polished frets to facilitate that “old-friend feel” from the moment it is first strapped on.

A guitar of this magnitude deserves nothing less than the best sounding vintage, single coil pickups on earth. For that we paid a visit to Anderson Pickupworks where we procured a set of sonically balanced, staggered magnet VAs—a VA1 for the neck, VA1R middle and the accommodating VA12 tucked in back. When running in tandem with the middle pickup, the VA12 demonstrates a pure VA1 tone but automatically switches to the revved up output of a VA2 when asked to stand alone. All this without loosing an ounce of its traditional character.

According to a recent e-mail from Doug: Ladies and Gentlemen meet Doug’s new Ruby Slippers, Classic…Dorothy. Doug is one lucky American.
