We are back from summer vacation! Tom thought it would be a great adventure if together we all did a guided expedition up the south face of Mt. Everest this year. I was a little apprehensive at first with such a considerable undertaking but my reservations were soon allayed when Tom announced, “We will be jamming at the top”—a figure of speech of course.
Bill Hudson is the magnanimous guitar player who submitted the winning bid and took home the Clint Black/American Flag, Hollow Drop Top that was auctioned off on eBay with all the proceeds going to benefit the families of the 9/11 victims—a very noble cause. He is pictured with Brian Harris of the Brook Mays Pro Shop as they revel in his newly acquired baby. As a kind-of thank you for his generosity, we invited Bill and Brian to join us on the climb.
Our guides made it clear that the best equipment is an absolute must on an expedition of this magnitude. In this kind of environment it is a matter of life and death so it was no surprise when Bill, who had taken Tom’s statement and the guide’s advice literally, showed up with his one-of-a-kind Drop Top in tow. He announced, “With the best gear we’ll be jamming at the top.” He strapped it on and we were ready to climb.
It was an arduous journey fraught with many real dangers but on the 5th day at 11:24 AM we were at the 29,028 foot summit and looking down upon the world when we heard it—music. Man, Bill can really play guitar—and with mittens on too. It was at the highest point on earth where we learned that Bill is a Tom Anderson guitar maniac. He collects them and cannot be without one in his hands at all times. That is why he risked life and limb to climb with one strapped on and why he plunged it into the snow head first when we first set foot at the top. Bill is a very nice and down to earth guy who has spent much of his musical career in the presence of some of the most influential figures in musical history and his playing reflects that.
On the way back down the mountain, the Sherpa guides joined us singing Western Classic Rock Tunes while Bill banged out the perfect guitar parts. This Anderson Adventure may go down in history as the most musical Everest expedition ever on record.
