The Vintage Mystique—what is it?

There are many that claim to know but closer investigation reveals differing opinions. Some say it is associated with a name or a logo, others profess it to be a style or a byproduct of structural integrity, while still others hear its signature in certain wood species or specific electronics. Although they may not admit it, most secretly wonder what it really is.

In actuality, it is the perfect amalgamation and balance of all the above attributes. But to those most deeply interested and steeped in the instruments of the 50’s and their tradition, it is a Swamp Ash body and a solid Maple neck that carries the torch.

It is very rare indeed to find a music store that understands the depth of all that is Vintage and at the same time embraces all sources of great musical tone. The Guitar Shoppe in Laguna Beach, California is such a store. Tom Anderson Guitarworks is happy to welcome The Guitar Shoppe as an Anderson Guitar dealer.

To kick off this grand event, they have just received this magnificent Translucent Blonde, Classic. One strum from this instrument, either plugged-in or unplugged, instantly clears up any confusion that might exist regarding Vintage Mystique. I was literally staggered playing this one for the first time.

As the pick glides across the strings, pure, lush vintage tone blooms from every pore of its highly resonant Swamp Ash body. You can literally feel this guitar reverberate from the tip of its headstock all the way down to the signature dual strap buttons at the rear. Its character encompasses pleasingly soft and musical mids seasoned with complex overtones and a touch of sparkle underpinned by a rich low end. To the amp this sweet sound makes it way, driven by purest Anderson VA pickups, in which you can select winding preferences for a total of 14 sonic combinations without deviating, even the slightest, from vintage values.

Wrapping your hand around the all-Maple neck’s infinitely comfortable Small 50’s “V” backshape makes it very clear that this guitar was crafted by those whose formative years were spent immersed in all that was wonderful about early American Rock & Roll Instruments. And yet one assertive sting bend, one glance at the fit and finish or one listen unplugged and you know the boundaries have been push—way up.

Enough talk. It is time to play!
