Tobacco Burst

Do you recall the song “American Pie” when Don McLean sang about “the day the music died?” The day to which he was referring was most certainly February 3rd 1959. If that is the case, then the day the music was born has to be September 7th 1936. “That’ll Be The Day” that Charles Hardin Holley was born. We all know and love him as Buddy Holly. And I really don’t think his importance to all of music, from the beginning of Rock and Roll to the present day, can be overstated.

Happy Birthday Buddy!

He was the first artist (along with Chuck Berry) to write his own songs—and what timeless melodies they have become, being covered by and generating huge hits for many of the major artists that followed. His writing style greatly influenced and encouraged almost all British music. This is especially evident in the writing styles of both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Even the band Weezer had a giant career launching hit with their song, written by Rivers Cuomo, called “Buddy Holly” in which he sings: “Woo-ee-oo I look just like Buddy Holly…”

You know what else looks just like Buddy Holly—or a least his guitar? This Tom Anderson Tobacco Burst, Classic! With its deep tobacco-colored bordering, this two color motif is quite reminiscent of the original Sunburst finish first appearing in 1954. In 1960 the Sunburst theme was changed to a 3 color variety and somewhere along the line the rich dark brown perimeter of both style bursts, which blended so well with the amber hues of its inner core, was changed to black.

One extremely nice appointment on this particular Classic is the addition of the Mint White pickguard which emphasizes the same subtle tint present in the finish, creating a warm symbiotic glow. A one ply white pickguard is available on request as a platform for the staggered magnet VA pickups if unwavering authenticity is high on your list of priorities.

What do you think Buddy really meant when he sang, “Its So Easy To Fall In Love?” Personally, I believe he could have been thinking about the lush, robust vintage tones effortlessly gushing forth from this gorgeous time machine and how it could improve his playing just to touch it. Well…I did say, “could have.”
