Atom Special
Mahogany
Translucent Cherry

...And while we’re on the subject of Specials…

You just can’t start showing pictures of beautiful all-Mahogany Atom Specials all over the place without including one finished in the legendary shade of Transparent Cherry. At least that is what Keith, from the superb Gelb Music near the Bay Area of California, says.

Keith was so moved by the allure of an Atom Special that he ordered this amazing Cherry to have and to hold as his very own from this day forward.

Interesting to note that Keith elected to endow this particular “Andy” with a set of M-Series pickups, M1 for the neck and the rather bold M3 at the bridge location. Gargantuan single coil tones are on tap in all switching positions while the M3, when pushed, can step over the line to take on light humbucker duties when necessary.

This impressive and rather versatile tonality is brought to your command, not only by M-Series pickups’ inherently huge, hum-free single coil nature, but also compliments of an interaction with Atom Special’s all-Mahogany structure and shorter 24 3/4-inch scale length. Among these symbiotic attributes a formidable alliance is formed that easily elicits attention. A comforting feeling when you step on stage.

But when it comes to Keith, the specialness (eccentricity) of his story had just begun.

When we realized his Atom Special would be involved in the Guitar of the Week, Special Series, we requested a picture of him playing his new Atom Special—a simple and fun request one would think. What we received was something, or rather someone, entirely different. Meet Peter Sawyer—playing Keith’s Atom Special.

Now don’t get us wrong here, we were delighted to see Peter—he is a splendid musician and Anderson Guitar Player in his own right—Atoms and Classics are his forte. His band is Seconds On End. In fact the “other guitar player” in the band also relies on a Hollow Drop Top with a Koa top and a Basswood back for his sonic signature. One might say Seconds On End is a two Anderson Guitar Player Band. Shadowland is their latest album.

But no picture of Keith—now that is weird. What’s up? After questioning Peter—since he is an Anderson Artist, we are very close—he confided in us that Keith had an “incident” after a show. Seems he arrived home at around 2:42AM and decided to heat up some after-gig Tater Tots. As the story goes, the door to the microwave did not latch properly, or Keith was on a total ego-high from dominating all night long with his Atom Special in hand. Either way you explain it, his head swelled to many times its normal size and he was not too keen on having his picture taken. Peter slipped us this photo to verify the facts of this unbelievable tale.

Not to worry though, we still think Keith looks great—big but great—and doctor says the swelling will be back down to normal again as soon as Keith humbly accepts the elevated attributes of his new Atom Special in stride.
