This week’s Guitar of the Week is reprinted from an article in the October 17, 2002, New England Journal of Scientific Truths entitled: A Search for the Reality of Light and Dark by Dr. H. Nelson—world-renowned physicist.

Physics finds light and darkness to be diametrically opposing conditions in which there exists an impossibility for both to occupy the same precise space in time. Ancient eastern philosophy, however, views light and darkness as two manifestations of the same cohesive whole that coexist simultaneously and harmoniously. A guitar player myself and eager for a greater understanding of this concept, I felt compelled to pay a visit to Anderson Guitarworks’ illustrious Research Facility—a place where all such questions of a cosmic nature seem to come clearly into focus.

I boarded a plane bound for the west coast and landed at a small rural airport out in the middle of nowhere. As I exited through the gate, there was a man leaning against the front fender of a new black Cadillac. He asked me where I wanted to go. Replying, “Tom Anderson Guitarworks’ Research Facility,” he gave a chuckle and said, “What a great place. Hop in and I’ll take you there.” I stowed my bags in the trunk and got in. He climbed behind the wheel, started the engine, cranked the Led Zeppelin tunes and floored it. The power of advertising and rock and roll is amazing but since I had come all this way in the name of a scientific understanding of parallel universes and to find the home of the world’s finest electric guitars, it all seemed rather serendipitous.

We wound our way through tree-lined roads and pulled up in front of large twin gates. The driver let me out and said, “Ring the bell and the gates will open.” I thanked him and he sped off in a cloud of music. The gates did open just as he had said they would. Following the sound of amazingly lush electric guitar tones, I found my way up a forested stone path and into a clearing. At the end of the pathway stood a rather majestic looking structure adorned with a large Anderson “A” logo. I had found it.

Exhilarated, I raised my hand to knock when the door swung open. I was warmly greeted by a man—the very same man who had given me a ride from the airport. He had an Anderson electric guitar strapped on with a cool looking Anderson guitar strap. It was too much for me to take and in the name of science I screamed, “Are you Tom?” He nodded and smiled. Overwhelmed by the moment I continued, “I love your guitars!” I dropped to my knees and clasp my hands together. “I have to have one,” I yelled. Why do they play and sound so good!?” I realized how I must look, regained my composure, stood up and said, “Oh yea…and do you think that light and dark are diametrically opposing or what?”

Tom understood, invited me in and gracefully explained tone, woods and frets. I was in total awe and knew I could not continue my scientific research without an Anderson guitar of my very own. After all, Einstein played the violin. But the big question was what color to order? They are all so beautiful. Tom suggested, “How do you like this one I’m holding? It is Tobacco Fade—a color with subtle but elegant vintage roots; a hue that simultaneously projects light and darkness into the same realm.” “What!” I screamed, “total elegant, vintage, subtle beauty that exists concurrently in parallel dominions of light and darkness? Oh my gosh, my scientific quest is has been realized!”

Tom went on to elaborate concerning the origin of the Tobacco Fade finish: “It began with a picture of Transparent Yellow that appeared in our catalog. To create a pleasingly warm ambiance, the photographer decided to center-light the guitar, which cast its perimeter into utter darkness. It was a very nice effect but in the world of guitars—the only place where bursted finishes are found—it created a whole new color—a color encompassing both a light center and dark periphery and occupying the same space/time continuum. Intoxicated by the true flawlessness of Tom’s magnificent instruments, I blurted out, “I have to have this guitar right now!” and calmly added, “…for scientific purposes of course.” Tom smiled and understandingly explained that he would love for me to have this guitar but it has already been promised to Jeff and Brian of the Brook Mays Pro Shop in Dallas and it is shipping to them today.

As calmly as I could, I asked if I could borrow the keys to the Cadillac. He replied that it was only rented for the day to pick me up from the airport. “That’s nice,” I said as I scooped up the keys and ran out the front door. I jumped in the car, fired it up and nailed the accelerator. With tunes blazing, I was headed for Dallas and the Brook Mays Pro Shop. I had to beat the UPS truck to their door. After 36 speeding tickets and unsuccessfully attempting to explain my remarkable discovery of darkness and light to the Police—I arrived.

I bought the Tobacco Fade, Hollow Drop Top Classic on the spot and headed for an international conference of physicists in Geneva where I would be addressing this very topic concerning the existence of simultaneous opposites. When it was my turn to speak, I stepped on stage, cleared my throat and whirled around with my new Hollow Drop Top Classic strapped on. With a windmill right hand I launched into “We Won’t Get Fooled Again.”

My new Anderson was the big hit of the conference, proving once and for all…something…oh yea, that Anderson guitars rule! After all, Einstein played the violin.
